LEGISLATIVE ALERT
From Legislative Director, Landis
Aden |
SB 1145 makes it
through House Committee of the Whole intact.
SB 1145 deals with your right to self defense.
It includes the improved "Castle Doctrine, and taking the Burden of Proof off
the back of the citizen who defends them self or family, and puts it back on the
State where it belongs.
The burden of proof
has been on the State for 85 years, and over that time prosecutors have been
able to convict many criminals. With the current law, which SB 1145 will fix,
you the innocent citizen are at risk of prosecution for any act of self
defense. It does not have to involve a firearm at all, it may be with a
baseball bat, kitchen knife, or my wife's meatloaf. It's the act of self
defense that puts you in peril.
The bill made it through the House committee, successfully fighting off damaging
amendments and with the one good amendment passing.
What next?
It goes to the House floor for a final vote, probably on Monday. If we pass that
hurdle, it would go to the Senate for a concurrence vote. One more call to your
two State Representatives is needed. Your action is what it took to overcome
full time tax paid lobbyists working against Citizen Rights.
The original bill passed the Senate by a 28 - 0 - 2 vote earlier this
year. But, it would help to remind your Senator to support your Human,
Constitutional and Civil Right to Self Defense once again.
Guilty unless proven innocent is just wrong.
If passing the Senate, it would then go to the Governor.
Thanks, everyone, for your help.
